Soil and Rain

(2025)

Soil and Rain first Iteration, was created during Murmuration Residency in Arena, Wisconsin, this piece
responds to the agricultural rhythms of the surrounding landscape. I collected soil from a farm field in transition,
one side recently planted with soy, the other still marked by last season’s corn. These alternating crops are part
of a rotation practice that allows the land to breathe, rest, and regenerate. Soy returns nitrogen to the soil, enriching
it after corn’s depletion. This exchange alters not only the soil’s nutrients but also its texture, color, and microbial life.
I layered soils from both sides, allowing rain to naturally settle them—echoing how water supports the cycles of planting,
harvesting, and renewal. The work traces a gesture of reciprocity between land and cultivation, revealing how human
patterns leave material imprints on the earth. By engaging with these shifts, I reflect on how the land remembers,
holds, and transforms through time, and how we too are shaped by this exchange.
